22 March 2006
Conference in Helsinki 2nd -3rd October 2006
The MSUO and Interreg IIIB Baltic Sea Neighborhood Programme will be holding a joint conference to discuss the use of the Motorways of the Sea concept to promote sustainable and safe transport of goods. The seminar will discuss the importance of Motorways of the Sea in promoting transport links between ports in the Baltic and Scandinavia to ports surrounding the Mediterranean, Black Sea, Atlantic and other parts of the World. The seminar will also seek to identify the possible mechanisms to encourage and fund Motorways of the Sea Projects in the next transnational programme for 2007 to 2013.
Motorways of the Sea are an important initiative to promote sustainable transport of goods to and through the European economic area as a “real competitive alternative to land transport”, as part of the Trans-European network (TEN-T). In addition, the initiative will aid port development by introducing new intermodal maritime-based logistics chains in Europe.
Four principle Motorways of the Sea Routes have been identified. In addition, the Interreg IIIB Northern Maritime Corridor I and II projects have identified a further route connecting North Sea Ports to Norway, Barents Sea and the North Atlantic. Initiatives are now being developed to map possible routes to provide geographical areas where actual Motorways of the Sea and associated port infrastructure can be developed (e.g. the InterBaltic Project in the Interreg IIIB Baltic Sea Region Neighborhood Programme).
