At this moment the MSUO co-ordination unit is working on the outcomes of the workshops held on the second day. A number of project ideas and workpackages have been proposed. The next few weeks, the MSUO will try to identify organisation with similar ideas and put together potential larger projects with potential organisations that could take part in these projects.

Motorways of the Sea Conference Helsinki: Presentations available 09 October 2006
'Safe, Sustainable and Financed Motorways of the Sea'
The joint MSUO and Interreg IIIB Baltic Sea Region Programme conference took place in Helsinki 2nd and 3rd October. Around 90 persons from 17 different countries around Europe participated, making the conference a unique opportunity to discuss and exchange experience on the developing Motorways of the Sea corridors in different parts of Europe. |
Upcoming Passenger Vessel Disaster Seminar 14 August 2006
Date: 11th - 13th October
Place: Inverness, Scotland
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency will host a seminar and table top exercise on the topic of Major Passenger Vessel Disasters in remote northern areas.
The Passenger Vessel Disaster Seminar is an important event to test the Passenger Vessel Safety Guidelines produced by the MSUO to assist projects, maritime authorities and the shipping industry. The seminar has been developed as part of the Interreg IIIB Safety at Sea Northern Periphery project. |

Project Development for 2007 - 2013 30 June 2006
As part of the work the MSUO is undertaking on future project development, the Maritime Governance and Techology Consortium (MGTC) has been contracted to assist the MSUO. The aim of the MGTC will be to identify maritime themes that could be developed as projects in the next Transnational and Cross-border programme (2007-2013). The MGTC will also seek to identify appropriate partners to take the projects forward |
Green Paper on an EU Maritime Policy published 08 June 2006
The European Commission has now published the Green Paper entitled "Towards a future Maritime Policy for the Union: A European vision for the oceans and seas". A one year consultation process started on the 7th June 2006 and will last until the 30th June 2007. Stakeholders are encouraged to get involved in the debate and present their view on the Green Paper.

Project to Project Co-operation: An update 21 March 2006
At the end of 2005, the MSUO commissioned two Project to Project (PPC) Initiatives, PPC 1a Risk Assessment and Acceptance, and PPC 2c Passenger Vessel Safety. The work on both is now well underway and expected to be finalised in May and October respectively.

MSUO Seminar "Refuge Area Best Practice": Presentations available 06 March 2006
The MSUO Seminar "Refuge Area Best Practice" took place in Brussels on the 23rd and 24th February. The seminar brought together leading representatives from the European Commission, Salvors, Coastguards, Shipping and Port industries, and hence provided a good opportunity for the delegates to learn more about the different aspects of the complex issue of refuge areas. |

Sensitivity and Habitat Mapping: Project Workshop 15 February 2006
On 23rd January 2006, the MSUO arranged a meeting of project representatives to discuss the use of Sensitivity and Habitat Mapping by Interreg Projects. The meeting was hosted by the Interreg IIIB Northern Periphery Programme Secretariat in Copenhagen. Each of the projects provided a presentation to describe their work. |
"Refuge Area Best Practice": MSUO Seminar 23rd & 24th February 25 January 2006
The protection of our coastlines and seas are vitally important to the well being of maritime resources and the local communities that depend on these. Safeguarding the lives of mariners is equally important. The MSUO is pleased to announce a forthcoming seminar on the use of Refuge Areas and Safe havens. The seminar will provide information on progress made since the loss of the Prestige, together with European and International examples of best practice.

MSUO Seminar: 'Best Practice in Local Contingency Planning 06 January 2006
December 2005 saw the launch of the MSUO seminar programme. The first event was the “Best Practice in Local Contingency Planning Pollution Response” seminar. The purpose of the event was to bring together leading organisations with experience in developing local contingency plans to deal with maritime incidents. |
MSUO Supported as Best Practice in recent speech of Commissioner Joe Borg 25 November 2005
The New European Maritime Policy conference took place in Brussels on the 17th November, organised by the Dutch Maritime Network and the Mare Forum. European maritime organisations were invited to bring forward their view on the New European Maritime Policy. This is a part of the European Commission's consultation process for its Green Paper on maritime policy, to be adopted in the first part of 2006. |
MSUO Upcoming Seminar: 'Best Practice in Local Contingency Planning' 16th December 2005 20 October 2005 The MSUO is organising their second seminar in December this year, in Southampton, UK. The title of the seminar is 'Best Practice in Local Contigency Planning', and it is open to anyone who has responsibility for the development of local contingency arrangements, as well as national competent athorities, industry representatives and Interreg (or other projects) examining maritime safety issues.

First Maritime Safety Seminar and Workshop

The first event of the Maritime Safety Umbrella Operation took place in Antwerp on 26th and 27th April 2005. Sixty-six people from international, European, national and local organisations attended the event. |
